Bears Bombard CC of Rhode Island in National Quarterfinals

GASTONIA, N.C. – Dallas College Brookhaven's women's soccer team opened up the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Tournament with a 10-1 win over Community College of Rhode Island Tuesday.

The No. 2-ranked and two-time defending national champion Bears (13-2-1) scored five goals in each half, punishing the Knights with an astonishing 51 shots, including 23 on goal. The 51 shots is a season high for Brookhaven, topping the previous mark of 48 in a 12-0 shutout of Dallas College Mountain View on Oct. 10.

Allyson Kolba and Meah Perez both scored two goals and had an assist for Brookhaven, which advances to Friday's 12:30 p.m. CT semifinals against Mohawk Valley Community College. Natalie Ipina, Kaley Robison, Whitni Newbill, Stephanie Farias, Bailey Clark and Natalie Lopez all had one goal for the Bears.

Brookhaven, whose two goalkeepers faced only two shots on goal, scored the game's first eight goals – the first six of which were recorded as unassisted. The first goal, a winner by Ipina, came 49 seconds into the game.

Farias' goal less than a minute into the second half put the Bears ahead 6-0. Newbill's goal six minutes later drew the first assist – a setup from Gracie Murillo.

After Robison's unassisted goal in the 60th minute put Brookhaven ahead 8-0, Tessa Cost scored for the Knights (10-4). Perez and Kolba each took turns assisting on each other's goals in the final 15 minutes to complete the scoring.

Brookhaven attempted 31 of its 51 shots in the second half. Community College of Rhode Island had two shots in each half – one of which was stopped by Bears starting goalkeeper Emma Garces.
