No. 1 Bears Remain Unbeaten Entering Friday's Match at Dallas College Eastfield
Dallas College Brookhaven's No. 1-ranked women's soccer team remained undefeated entering Friday's game at Dallas College Eastfield.
The Bears, who hold the top spot in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III rankings with a 5-0-1 overall, 3-0-1 Dallas Athletic Conference mark, are coming off their third straight win -- all in conference play, following Tuesday's 7-0 victory over Dallas College Mountain View.
Forward Alexa Bezpalko scored two goals, including the gamewinner in the 23rd minute on an assist from Isis Balderas, as Brookhaven recorded its third straight shutout. Bezpalko also had an assist, giving her a team-leading 14 points. Midfielder Kaley Robison also had two goals and an assist in the win over the Lions. She now has 11 points this season.
Whitni Newbill, Natalie Lopez and Meleni Lorenzo each scored a goal, while Nyla Zarrag finished with three assists, and Balderas and Lorezon each finished with two assists. Newbill and Kenya Reynolds had one assist apiece.
It was the highest scoring output of the season for the Bears. Last year, the reigning national champions, scored eight or more goals six times, with a season-high of 15.
The Bears have allowed two goals through six games this season. Hayli Nichols and Cameron Watson shared the shutout Tuesday, with Watson stopping three shots in the second half. The two keepers, along with Elora Alexander, have combined to blank four teams this season. Nichols is 5-0-1 between the posts.
Friday's game at Eastfield kicks off at 6 p.m., and will serve as the final game of the first round of DAC play. The Bears begin the second half of conference play Tuesday at Dallas College Richland, whom Brookhaven tied 1-1 at home in the first meeting between the two nationally-ranked teams.
