Bears Rally in 9th to Rain on Suns in Game 1

LANCASTER, Texas – Dallas College Brookhaven's baseball team rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to overcome a one-run deficit to beat host Dallas College Cedar Valley in an extended weather-delayed game at Lancaster High School Wednesday.

The Bears, who've won three straight, trailed 5-4 in the ninth inning before scoring three runs. Brookhaven pitcher Grady Silva held the Suns scoreless in the ninth to seal the win. Silva worked the final four innings, allowing two runs, four hits and two walks, and struck out three in the victory.

The Bears (21-25, 14-11 Dallas Athletic Conference) scored twice in the first on a Payton Stephenson bases-loaded foul popup RBI and a wild pitch. Cedar Valley (17-30, 5-20) answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Harrison Hickey, which allowed Easton Bettcher.

Brookhaven added a run in the second on a fielder's choice RBI by Jorge Sanchez on a play that the Suns used a double play to get out of the inning. The Bears made it 4-1 in the third, capitalizing on another wild pitch.

Cedar Valley scored on Anthony Fuentes' fielder's choice RBI and Joshawa Esquivel's RBI walk to pull within 4-3.

Then lightning set in, setting off an over two-hour weather delay. After the two teams reconvened, the Suns took the lead with two runs in the sixth. The score remained 5-4 until the ninth inning when Abraham Fortis, Stephenson and Aidan Corey came up RBIs before Silva tightened up in the ninth to put the game away.

Brookhaven had 11 hits, including two each by AJ Garcia, Fortis and Stephenson. Fortis doubled, and Stephenson tripled.

The Bears will host the Suns at 12 p.m. Thursday in Game 2. Game 3 is set for noon Saturday, also in Farmers Branch, Texas.
