Bears Clip No. 6 Thunderducks, Claim Series

DALLAS – Dallas College Brookhaven's baseball team beat No. 6 nationally-ranked Dallas College Richland 8-7 in the final game of a three-game series Friday. The victory gave the Bears, who are receiving votes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III rankings, the series win.

Brookhaven (25-21, 13-8 Dallas Athletic Conference) pulled out Game 1 of the series 14-13. Richland (26-18, 15-6) won the second game 6-4.

In the series finale, the Bears took a 6-3 lead after scoring three runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Thunderducks tied it in the sixth after scoring twice. Brookhaven answered with two in the seventh to go ahead 8-6. Richland cut it to 8-7 with a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Bears closer Zachary Weaver came on to record to the last out to preserve the win.

It was Weaver's second save of the season.

Caleb Kennedy (1-1) earned the win in relief, allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk, while recording one strikeout in two-and-a-third innings.

Brookhaven shortstop Abraham Fortis went 3 for 4 with an RBI. Designated hitter Cyler Moore was 2 for 5 with a double and an RBI. First baseman Brett Petillo drove in three runs, going 1 for 5. Second baseman Isaiah Nava was 1 for 4 with two walks, an RBI and a stolen base. Right fielder Philip Orr was 1 for 5 with a walk, an RBI and two stolen bases. Dalton Stanley had a pinch hit, and catcher Luis Fuenmayor was 1 for 3.

The Bears had 10 hits. The Thunderducks collected five.

Brookhaven begins a three-game series at Dallas College Mountain View 12 p.m. Wednesday. The final two games of the series are scheduled for noon Friday and Saturday at Brookhaven.
