Bears Tangle with Suns in District Tournament Wednesday
Sixth-seeded Dallas College Brookhaven's baseball team will meet third-seeded Dallas College Cedar Valley 10 a.m. Wednesday in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III South Central District Tournament at Dallas College Eastfield.
The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to the double-elimination round Thursday. The championship game is set for noon Saturday, with an if-necessary game to follow. The tournament schedule may be altered due to weather conditions.
Brookhaven (15-36) beat Cedar Valley (36-19) in two of the three games of last week's final regular season Dallas Athletic Conference series.
The Bears are batting .296 as a team. They won nine games after April began.
Hunter Pope leads Brookhaven with a .419 average in 23 games, and has eight doubles, four home runs, a triple, 26 runs batted in and five stolen bases. Ray Jaramillo is batting .336 with nine doubles, a triple, two homers, 24 RBI and seven stolen bases. Joseph Jaco has a .333 average with six doubles, a triple, a homer, 14 RBI and seven stolen bases. Balin Valentine is hitting .331 with 16 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 18 RBI and 19 stolen bases. Bo Dinscore is hitting .328 with 11 doubles, a triple, three homers, 27 RBI and four stolen bases. Peyton Starr is batting .321 with 12 doubles, a triple, eight home runs, 38 RBI and nine stolen bases. Tucker Simpson is hitting .301 with 11 doubles, two triples, four homers, 23 RBI and two stolen bases.
Valentine is tied for 23rd in the NJCAA Division III in doubles. Starr is tied for 26th in home runs.
Jason Bonnett and Jacob Leskovsky each have two wins on the mound. Bonnett has a 5.46 earned run average and 72 strikeouts in 16 appearances. Hunter Beltran and Ronald Zamora each has two saves.
Bonnett's 72 strikeouts rank 13th in the country.
